Practice One - first blood to Vettel at Interlagos
Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber started the way they intend to carry on this weekend in Brazil, as Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso ran into trouble. Vettel set the fastest time quite comfortably in Friday morning’s opening practice session, almost half a second ahead of the Australian, 1m 12.328s to 1m 12.810s.
Encouragingly for McLaren, Lewis Hamilton was third quickest in 1m 12.845s as the team spent most of the session assessing another batch of new parts. Team mate Jenson Button backed Hamilton with 1m 13.267s to take fourth best time ahead of Robert Kubica, who lapped his Renault in 1m 13.370s. Nico Rosberg was also up there for Mercedes in sixth with 1m 13.516s, chased by Rubens Barrichello for Williams on 1m 13.546s, Michael Schumacher in the second Mercedes on 1m 13.643s, and Adrian Sutil in the lead Force India on 1m 13.918s.
Nick Heidfeld was BMW Sauber’s lead runner with 1m 14.000s, fractionally ahead of team mate Kamui Kobayashi who posted 1m 14.004s before a big spin right at the end of the session brushed his C29 into a tyre wall.
Williams’ Nico Hulkenberg took 12th in 1m 14.155s on his first acquaintance with Interlagos, ahead of the Ferraris which, as they used to earlier in the season, focused on race work. Alonso lapped in 1m 14.246s, Ferrari team mate Felipe Massa in 1m 14.267s, but there was bad news for the points leader when he rolled to a halt with 10 minutes left with technical problems. The team had already been planning to change his engine ahead of the afternoon session.
Renault’s Vitaly Petrov was another to have a bad start to his day, crashing heavily in Turn Six after lapping in 1m 14.370s, while Tonio Luzzi was 16th in the second Force India on 1m 14.487s ahead of the Toro Rossos. Jaime Alguersuari had a spin but once again headed team mate Sebastien Buemi, 1m 14.618s to 1m 14.734s.
Jarno Trulli’s Lotus was the fastest of the new team runners on 1m 15.603s, then came Timo Glock in the lead Virgin on 1m 15.860s ahead of Heikki Kovalainen’s Lotus on 1m 16.057s and Virgin tester Jerome d’Ambrosio on 1m 16.707s. At the back, Christian Klien’s return to active duty in place of Sakon Yamamoto saw the Austrian lap his HRT in 1m 16.839s ahead of team mate Bruno Senna, on 1m 17.360s.
