BMW Motorsport boss Mario Theissen has confirmed he will step down from the role next year.
Theissen, who headed up BMW's stint as a Formula One constructor between 2006 and 2009, will be replaced by Jens Marquardt on June 30 2011, with the pair working in a dual capacity for six months up to that date.
The change comes ahead of BMW's entry to the German Touring Car Championship (DTM) from the start of the 2012 season.
"We have planned and prepared this changeover very carefully," said Theissen, who has been in charge of BMW's motorsport programme since 1999.
"With the realignment of BMW Motorsport and the decision in favour of the DTM project, the path to a successful future on the race track has been mapped out.
"Now is also the best time to entrust the leadership of BMW Motorsport to new hands.
"I have no doubt that in Jens Marquardt we have found the right man for this exciting task and I look forward to our time working together.
"On 1 July 2011 he will be perfectly equipped to take over the reins."
Marquardt joins from Toyota, where he served as the Japanese manufacturer's F1 team manager for two years until their withdrawal from the sport at the end of 2009.
