Sebastian Vettel secured his tenth pole position of the season but team-mate Mark Webber has it all to do on Sunday if he wants to take his first world title as he could only manage fifth on the grid behind Jenson Button and Fernando Alonso.

It looked as if McLaren had thrown a huge spanner in the works of Alonso's quest for a third drivers' title with Hamilton and Button lying second and third and the Ferrari driver fifth with only seconds remaining. But Alonso just crossed the line in time for a final flying lap and snatched third out of the bag with his best lap of the day.

Lewis Hamilton lines up alongside Vettel on the front row after escaping stewards censure after he appeared to hold up Felipe Massa on his fast lap towards the end of Q2 . Hamilton out-braked himself into the corner and then appeared to delay Massa before collecting a bollard in getting out of the way.

Felipe Massa lines up alongside Webber on the third row and is in a great position to try and overtake Webber and help out his team-mate. Michael Schumacher enjoyed a rare moment of qualifying superiority over team-mate Nico Rosberg, the Mercedes duo lining up eighth and ninth on the grid. And Vitaly Petrov also outqualified team-mate Robert Kubica, the Renault drivers lining up ninth and tenth.

At the tail end of the grid, Jarno Trulli out-qualified Lotus team-mate Heikki Kovalainen, Timo Glock was quicker than Lucas di Grassi and Bruno Senna lines up ahead of Christian Klien.

It all makes for a fascinating grand prix on Sunday, and if they finish as they started qualifying, Alonso will be the world champion for a third time.
