(Reuters) - Acer, now the world's second-largest PC vendor, hopes to clinch the top spot from rival HP next year, the Taiwanese company's chief executive told a Swiss newspaper on Sunday.

"If the mobile world continues to grow, we will necessarily replace HP as the world's biggest computer-maker," CEO Gianfranco Lanci told the SonntagsZeitung in an interview.

He also said the group would sell more than a million telephones this year.

Acer entered the smartphone industry last year, aiming to reach 6 percent to 7 percent of the market in three to five years.

Its success has so far been very limited, but handset vendors are closely watching the PC vendors move into their marketplace.
