(Reuters) - Verizon Communications is considering charging customers of its Verizon Wireless venture based on the speed of their mobile data service, a spokesman for the company said on Wednesday.

The move comes as U.S. carriers experiment with different ways to charge for data services including fees based on the amount of data a consumer downloads to their device.

While charging based on data speeds is not a new concept for landline Internet services, it would be unusual in mobile where data speeds vary depending on the number of customers served by the nearest broadcast tower at a given time.

"We're looking at it as a possibility," said Verizon spokesman Peter Thonis, but he could not provide details of how this would work technically

"It's not something we've nailed down," he said.

The concept was first reported on the Wall Street Journal website on Wednesday from an interview with the company's chief executive and its chief financial officer.

Verizon Wireless is a venture of Verizon and Vodafone Group Plc.
