German sports carmaker gives green light to all-new Cajun

- Porsche has announced there will be a new SUV sitting under the Cayenne model range called Cajun. The entry-level SUV has been inspired by the success of its bigger brother and will be targeted at the likes of the Range Rover Evoque. Porsche describes the Cajun with "lightweight, ease of handling and agility".

Q5 Hybrid could provide basis for eco-friendly Cajun.

- No technical details were provided, although it is thought that the Cajun will be based on the Q5 from sister-brand Audi. Such a strategy will allow Porsche to tap on the efficient petrol and diesel engines Audi has on offer.

- A hybrid version of the Cajun is also likely, given that Audi has just announced the first details of the Q5 Hybrid including a 245hp 2.0-litre turbo-petrol mated to an electric motor backed by lithium-ion battery. Audi claims a 7.1sec 0-100kph time, 14kpl economy and the ability to run on electricity alone for 3km at under 60kph.

- Sharing technology and platform with Audi isn't new. The Cayenne has been developed alongside the Q7, as well as the Volkswagen Touran. Moreover, all three giant SUVs have a petrol/electric hybrid drivetrain to choose from, targeted mainly for the Americans.

KEY QUESTION: Now that there will be a cheaper sport-utility vehicle for the younger generation of Porsche fans to buy, will there be a new model sitting below the Boxster/Cayman sports car?
