Di Montezemolo: 2011 regulations a concern

Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo admits that he is not 100% convinced by some of the regulations that will be introduced in 2011.

As of next season teams will be able to make use of an adjustable rear wing that can only be used when a driver is a certain distance behind the car he is chasing. By tweaking the rear wing, drag will be reduced making it easier for the car to overtake, especially since the car in front cannot defend by making use of the device himself.

While the change is intended to make races more exciting by increasing overtaking opportunities, di Montezemolo is fearful that the new rule will result in a scandal much like the 2009 disagreement regarding the double diffuser regulations.

Ferrari and others were outraged when the FIA deemed that the diffusers used by Brawn GP, Williams and Toyota to be legal when other teams insisted that they contravened the regulations.

"As for the rear wing, I hope we start the season with total clarity as regards the regulations," said the Italian.

"I am not worried about it, but our experience of 2009 still grates."

Another change that will be seen next season is the re-introduction of the Kinetic Energy Recovery Systems (KERS) that was used last year.

Ferrari used the device a lot more than many other outfits, and di Montezemolo is confident that this will leave them in good stead heading into the new season.

"We are starting from a solid base," he said.

"I'm thinking here of the fact that at the end of last year, our energy recovery system was very competitive," he added.
