Zetsche confirms Mercedes in F1 long-term

The CEO of Daimler, parent to the Mercedes company, has reaffirmed the companies ambitions and says the manufacturer is in the sport for the long haul, despite a disappointing 2010.

Dieter Zetsche had expected more from the teams takeover of Brawn GP in 2009 but admitted championship glory in 2010 'wasn't realistic'.

"We have been in F1 for some time and we're staying here for the long-term. We don't want to be deciding each year whether we are in or whether we are out," he told the DPA news agency.

"We can't have expected more as a newly formed team, however we would not have complained if we had won the championship, of course, but it wasn't a realistic expectation," he added.

Looking to 2011, Zetsche is expecting a much more competitive year but warned there aren't any guarantees in F1.

"It is clear that the public, and also ourselves, expect us to be looking better than this year.

"One must, however, accept that in F1, success is not reliably predictable. Otherwise, it would be dead boring," he concluded.
