GreenBkk Tech | Facebook and Twitter puts friends at top of wish lists

Facebook and Twitter puts friends at top of wish lists

The site analyses Tweets and Facebook posts for data on Christmas wish lists.

A Christmas spent with friends and family top festive wish lists, according to analysis of messages posted to Facebook and Twitter.

The messages mentioning Christmas wants are being captured and analysed for a real-time feed.

In its first day, the service processed more than 40,000 messages.

"People want everything from iPads to a divorce," said Steve Richards, head of social media agency Yomego, which created the wish list analyser.

Putting the code together to analyse messages took about a week, said Mr Richards. The trickiest part was tuning it to properly recognise messages genuinely dealing with Christmas wants but smart enough to avoid spam.

The system works by looking in messages for keywords that break down all the wants and wishes into specific categories.

The top category on the opening day was "people" which included wishes to spend time with family at Christmas or a specific individual such as Angelina Jolie.

But requests for Christmas presents varied from general calls for goodwill to all men to very specific items such as leopard cubs or a tummy tuck.
