Alonso: “We know where to improve to be perfect from March to November”
Madonna di Campiglio, 13 January – A new season is beginning but there’s no avoiding a return to the one that’s just past – all the more so as it finished with such an intense sporting event as Fernando Alonso’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
“In the second part of the year we made an extraordinary recovery then, at the last race, we didn’t manage to win the title,” said Fernando. “Certainly after the race you can say that decision was wrong and we should have acted differently. But at the moment that we chose to come into the pits it seemed the right move to us. Now we can stand here and say the degradation of the soft tyres evolved in a surprising manner and that we could have stayed on the track until lap 30 but it’s easy to say that now. The truth is that, as I’ve always said, even if they seem predictable words, you win and you lose together. If it’s true that you learn more from defeats than victories it’s also true that for me 2010 was a success. It’s no longer worth thinking about Abu Dhabi: one minute more given to this means a minute less to dedicate to this year’s work.
“At the end of every season you do an assessment: we know that there are areas where we must improve while seeking to keep up our strengths,” added the Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro driver. “We lost so many points in the first part of the year and we know that we will have to be perfect from March to November to win. We’ve made some changes inside the team that I’m sure will help improve things – as you have to do in every field, not just sport. I know Pat Fry very well, having worked with him at McLaren, and I think that he can be a big help to us.”

Madonna di Campiglio, 13 gennaio – Parte una nuova stagione ma non ci si può esimere da ritornare ancora su quella passata, tanto più se si è conclusa con un evento sportivamente così intenso come il Gran Premio di Abu Dhabi di Fernando Alonso. “Nella seconda parte dell’anno abbiamo fatto una rimonta straordinaria poi, all’ultima gara, non siamo riusciti a vincere il titolo” – ha detto Fernando – “Sicuramente dopo la gara si può dire che quella decisione era sbagliata e che si doveva fare diversamente ma, nel momento in cui abbiamo scelto di rientrare ai box ci sembrava che quella fosse la mossa giusta. Poi possiamo stare qui a dire che il degrado delle gomme morbide si è evoluto in maniera sorprendente e che avremmo potuto stare in pista fino al trentesimo giro ma è facile dirlo adesso. La verità è che, come ho detto sempre, anche se sembrano parole scontate, si vince e si perde tutti insieme. Se è vero che si impara di più dalle sconfitte che dalle vittorie è altrettanto vero che per me il 2010 è stato un successo. Non vale più la pena pensare ad Abu Dhabi: un minuto in più dedicato a questo significa un minuto in meno da dedicare al lavoro di quest’anno.”
“Alla fine di ogni stagione si fa un bilancio: sappiamo che ci sono delle aree dove dobbiamo migliorare cercando di mantenere i punti di forza” - ha proseguito il pilota della Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro – “Noi abbiamo perso tanti punti nella prima parte dell’anno e siamo consapevoli che dovremo essere perfetti da marzo a novembre per vincere. Abbiamo fatto alcuni cambiamenti nella squadra che, ne sono sicuro, vanno nella direzione di migliorare le cose, come del resto deve essere in ogni realtà, non soltanto nello sport. Conosco molto bene Pat Fry, con cui ho lavorato alla McLaren, e penso che ci potrà dare un bell’aiuto.”
