Massa: “I’ve always been under pressure”
Madonna di Campiglio, 13 January – Felipe Massa’s career has always been characterised by pressure. When he took his first steps in the Italian Formula Renault Championship Felipe knew that he would have to win to secure the budget necessary to complete the season. In Formula 1 the Brazilian driver has always had very strong team-mates, such as world champions Michael Schumacher, Kimi Raikkonen, Fernando Alonso and Jacques Villeneuve, and he’s always had loads of pressure on his back. Countless drivers have been rumoured to be on the verge of taking his place at Ferrari.
“I’ve always felt pressure in my career – indeed I’m the first to put pressure on myself,” says Felipe. “You notice external pressure but it’s much less important. What counts is what you show on the track, inside the cockpit of the car, and how the team makes you feel – and I feel the faith and respect that Ferrari has for me. I like reading that they speak well of me, I certainly don’t deny that, but I think that’s the same for everyone. What counts is that I know, if I have a car that suits my characteristics, that I will be able to battle for the title.
“Montezemolo has spoken about having my brother driving in certain races last year? But he’d already spoken about brothers the year before – that time it was Kimi’s!” joked the Brazilian driver. “I know that last year things didn’t go well but now we have to look to the future and do well this year.”
Massa: “Sempre stato sotto pressione”
Madonna di Campiglio, 13 gennaio – La carriera di Felipe Massa è stata sempre contraddistinta dalla pressione. Quando muoveva i primi passi nel campionato italiano di Formula Renault, Felipe sapeva che doveva vincere per assicurarsi il budget necessario a proseguire la stagione. In Formula 1 il pilota brasiliano ha sempre avuto compagni di squadra molto forti, come i campioni del mondo Michael Schumacher, Kimi Raikkonen, Fernando Alonso e Jacques Villeneuve, e ha sempre avuto addosso tanta pressione: non si contano i piloti che avrebbero dovuto sostituirlo, secondo i rumour, alla guida della Rossa. “La pressione l’ho sempre sentita nella mia carriera, anzi sono il primo a mettermela addosso” – dice Felipe – “Quella dall’esterno si percepisce ma è molto meno importante. Quello che conta è ciò che si prova in pista, dentro l’abitacolo della macchina, e quello che ti fa capire la squadra e io sento la fiducia e il rispetto che la Ferrari ha per me. Poi fa piacere leggere che si parla bene di te, non lo nego di certo, ma penso che sia lo stesso per tutti: quello che conta è che sono consapevole che, se riuscirò ad avere una macchina che si adatta alle mie caratteristiche, allora potrò essere lì a lottare per il titolo.”
“Montezemolo ha parlato di mio fratello al volante in certe gare dello scorso anno? Ma di fratelli ne aveva già parlato l’anno prima: allora era quello di Kimi!” – ha risposto scherzando il pilota brasiliano – “So bene che l’anno scorso le cose non sono andate bene ma adesso bisogna guardare al futuro e a fare bene quest’anno.”
