Montezemolo at “Wrooom”: “FOTA can have a future”
Madonna di Campiglio, 14 January –In his chat with the media, Luca di Montezemolo also spoke in very plain terms about the current situation at FOTA. “If the teams know how to remain united and work in constructive fashion, as part of the virtuoso triangle alongside the FIA and the commercial rights holder, than this organisation has a future. When I was president, it was a different more difficult time, whereas now the atmosphere is calmer. The fact remains that Formula 1 has to be the highest level of this sport therefore there cannot be too big a gap between the big and small teams in terms of how competitive they are.”
As to allegations that Red Bull overspent on its budget and on comments made by Helmut Marko, the Ferrari President had this to say. “I have heard these stories, but I don’t know if they are true. If they turn out to be correct, then it shows that our long held view that we are against an artificial cap is the right one: it is impossible to run checks when for example, there are companies involved which can manufacture in various countries. Plus there are always polemical situations in Formula. I am pleased to see that, after the Brawn comet and its titles which, might I say came with some technical “drug taking” we then had another team taking both titles last year, one that is maybe not yet in the habit of winning: it’s part of the game and its great, but maybe when others have won 10% of what Ferrari has won, then they can also have their say.”
The meeting could not end without a nod to the idea of staging a Grand Prix in Rome. “I said it at the Christmas dinner with the Italian media: the teams’ view is not to exceed a certain number of races per year: already the season goes on forever,” said Montezemolo. “The preference is to have Grands Prix in new countries in important markets, first off in the United States, rather than have two races in Germany, Spain, or eventually Italy. Therefore, Ecclestone’s letter is not a failure for Rome, but the awareness that there is a desire to have just one Grand Prix in Italy. Alternating it with Monza? We would need to see if that suits Ecclestone, if the conditions are right, if the two cities can agree, while not forgetting that Monza is a permanent circuit that is part of the history of Formula 1.”

Madonna di Campiglio, 14 gennaio – Nella sua chiacchierata con i rappresentati dei media, Luca di Montezemolo ha parlato anche dello situazione della FOTA ed è stato molto esplicito: “Se le squadre sapranno restare insieme e lavorare in maniera costruttiva come parte di quel triangolo virtuoso formato insieme alla FIA e al detentore dei diritti commerciali allora c’è un futuro per questa organizzazione. Quando sono stato presidente era un momento diverso, più difficile mentre ora il clima è molto più sereno. Rimane il fatto che la Formula 1 deve rimanere uno sport di vertice, quindi non ci può essere un divario eccessivo fra i team grandi e quelli piccoli in termini di competitività.”
Quanto alle voci su un presunto sforamento delle spese da parte della Red Bull e su alcune dichiarazioni di Helmut Marko, il Presidente della Ferrari ha così risposto: “Prendo atto di queste voci ma non so se siano vere. Se così fosse, si dimostrerebbe che la nostra storica posizione di essere contrari ad un tetto artificiale alle spese era giusta: è impossibile fare dei controlli quando, ad esempio, ci sono in lizza aziende che possono produrre in diversi Paesi. Poi ci sono sempre delle polemiche in Formula 1. Mi fa piacere vedere che, dopo la meteora Brawn e i suoi titoli un po’ per così dire arrivati con il doping tecnico c’è stato chi ha conquistato due titoli lo scorso anno e forse non è ancora abituato a vincere come comportamenti: fa parte del gioco, mi va benissimo ma magari quando questo qualcuno avrà vinto il 10% di quello che ha vinto la Ferrari allora potremo anche rispondere.”
Non poteva mancare un accenno alla discussione intorno al progetto di un Gran Premio a Roma. “L’avevo detto nella cena di Natale con i giornalisti italiani: l‘orientamento delle squadre era quello di non andare oltre un certo numero di gare in calendario: già ora la stagione è eterna” – ha detto Montezemolo – “La preferenza è per avere Gran Premio in Paesi nuovi e in mercati importanti, primo fra tutti gli Stati Uniti, piuttosto che due gare in Germania, Spagna o, eventualmente, Italia. Quindi la lettera di Ecclestone non è una bocciatura di Roma ma la presa d’atto che la volontà è di avere un solo Gran Premio in Italia. L’alternanza con Monza? Bisogna vedere se va bene ad Ecclestone, se ci sono le condizioni, se sono d’accordo le due città, fermo restando che Monza è un circuito permanente e che fa parte della storia della Formula 1.”
