Brawn: Schumi will be better this year

Mercedes team boss Ross Brawn is optimistic Michael Schumacherwill go "decidedly better" this year after his struggles in 2010.

The seven-time World Champion was expected to challenge for the title in his first season back in F1, but he failed to pick up a podium and finished ninth in the standings, a long way behind team-mate Nico Rosberg.

Schumacher turned 42 on January 3 and Brawn says he knows what present the German wants from him.

"I haven't thought about any particular present for Michael Schumacher, because I already know what he wants from me: a competitive car," he told Gazzetta della Sport.

"I'm still optimistic because Michael's performances at the end of last season were encouraging. I'm convinced he will go decidedly better this year."

Many thought Schumacher's problems last year were down to his struggles with the Bridgetown tyres and, with F1 switching to Pirelli rubbers this year, many believe it will give him a boost.

Brawn, though, believes it's too early to tell.

"It's premature to say that," he said.

"In the Abu Dhabi test we didn't detect big differences compared to the performances obtained with Bridgestones, but it's clear that, by changing supplier, the cars need to be adapted. We'll see a lot of changes during winter testing."
