Ferrari eye strong start

Ferrari have set their sights on a strong start to the new Formula One season in an attempt to avoid a repeat of their poor end to the 2010 campaign.

After claiming a 1-2 in the season-opening race in Bahrain last year, Ferrari went through a slump and it took a late charge Fernando Alonso to help them to challenge for the Drivers' Championship. However, their season finished in disappointing fashion when a tactical error from the pit wall at the Abu Dhabi GP saw Alonso's hopes go up in smoke.

The Italian team are now targeting a better start to the 2011 season so that they don't fall short by the smallest of margins again.

Speaking at Ferrari's annual Wrooom event in Italian Dolomites, team principal Stefano Domenicali says too much focus has been put on the strategic errors in Abu Dhabi, but says their main problem was not picking up enough points early in the season.

"We have to start this year competitive right away, because if you don't in this competitive state it becomes very tough," he said.

Domenicali also believes the switch from Bridgestone tyres to Pirelli rubbers could play a big role this year.

"On the rear tyres there are still some steps to be done," he said. Due to the time we also haven't done tests with wet tyres.

"We need to thank Pirelli, without them we would be running on rims.

"This year, qualifying should not be as important as it was last season. Last season was very interesting and competitive but there wasn't a lot of overtaking. This is a fundamental aspect which must be worked on."
