Schumacher backs rear wing changes

While many in the paddock were left unconvinced by the new adjustable rear wings following the year's first pre-season test, Michael Schumacher is happy with the innovation.

Aimed at aiding overtaking, the adjustable rear wings stall downforce on a straight before being clicked back into place in the breaking zone, a move which should allow a following car to make a pass if they are sufficiently close on the straight.

While the FIA are yet clarify some details regarding to the device, including when a driver will be permitted to make use of it, some drivers have already made their displeasure with the innovation known.

Rubens Barrichello was the most vocal of the bunch, insisting that: ""It's just not enjoyable -pressing buttons, changing gear, pressing and holding."

However, Barrichello's former Ferrari team-mate has given the new rear wings the thumbs up.

"It's a good innovation," Schumacher told Auto Motor und sport.

"We know that in Formula One there is a problem with cars following each other. If there is not a dramatic change in the ration between aerodynamic and mechanical grip you need something else to get close to the car in front. Maybe this is it."

The seven-time World Champion added that the innovation is unlikely to make overtaking a simple matter.

"There is no button that just allows us to drive past someone," explained the German.

"It could be that we just close the gap and get in the slipstream to start a fight. Or it could be that it's not quite enough," he concluded.
