Vettel questions regulation changes

Sebastian Vettel has questioned whether it is really necessary for Formula One to introduce new ways of improving the show year in, year out.

For 2011 F1 has introduced moveable rear wings in order to make it easier to overtake and the new Pirelli tyre compounds have been designed to make racing more unpredictable. Add to that the re-introduction of KERS, and the cars will be quite different to drive this season.

"F1 is becoming more radical, with more and more attention being put into the show," Vettel told German magazine Der Spiegel. "I wonder if this is necessary."

There are some concerns that too much is being asked of drivers and that the new regulations could make F1 too predictable.

"If a critical point is reached, we would sit down together and discuss it," added Vettel. "It's about our safety."

One of the safety concerns is an apparent delay between the pressing of the button and the time it takes for the moveable rear wing to click back into place before braking. At Jerez last week, observers said there were several drivers having problems under heavy braking after the long straight.

"There is a sort of 'no man's land' of at least 5 metres when the load on the wing is not felt yet," Jarno Trulli confirmed to Autosprint.

But McLaren's Jenson Button countered: "Actually I was quite surprised how quickly it (the wing) reacts to the pressing of a button."
