Fernando Alonso, fifth in qualifying, said at the Yas Marina circuit that it was a good result because "the lap went well, the car performed well, and we are two or three tenths off the lead".
"I got a really good vibe. Sometimes you have an average lap, or you mount the odd kerb, or you lose a tenth here or there and find you are just a few hundredths off the pace, and you end up feeling that you could have gained a few places. The lap went well, the car performed well and we are two or three tenths off the lead," said Alonso.
He also revealed he was "happy to be starting on the clean side" of the track. " We have tried quite a few starts over the weekend and it's not that there is any great difference, but I suppose it will be better to start from there," he indicated.
The Spanish two-time world champion feels that his result "is about right", and what his team were expecting. "No big problems with the car, half a second or so off pole... Although we don't want to have Red Bull and McLaren in front of us, it's not such a big difference bearing in mind this is the same car as in Hungary. That was in July, and now, in November, we are half a second off pole. I feel we have made the most of the potential we had back then," he said.
Fernando Alonso explained why he made a second attempt in the third round of qualifying (Q3): "We had only planned to have one go, but as the first didn't wasn't quite right we decided to have a second, the temptation being to try to get ahead".
"I don't feel it will be any great drawback that we have used all the sets of tyres, as the wear here is not excessive. It's not one of those tracks where you are looking at three or four stops because the tyres only last a few laps... Here we might do two stops, as in the last few grands prix. Having one set more or less is not such a big deal," he added.
Despite having finished "fairly close" to the Red Bulls and McLarens, Alonso knows that "tomorrow it will be hugely difficult to get on the podium".
"We need the perfect race and for them to do something wrong. If they start well, Button, Hamilton and Vettel should in theory be on the podium. We would be in there scrapping with Webber for fourth place. If something happens to the guys in front, any contact or penalty, then we will be right there trying to take advantage," he remarked.

Fernando Alonso, quinto en la sesión de clasificación, declaró en el circuito Yas Marina que su resultado ha sido bueno porque "la vuelta ha salido bien, el coche se ha comportado bien, y estamos a dos o tres décimas del de delante".
"Me quedé con un muy buen sabor de boca. A veces das una vuelta regular, o te subes por algún piano, o ves que pierdes alguna decimilla y ves que estás a pocas centésimas del de delante y te quedas pensando que podías haber ganado alguna posición. La vuelta ha salido bien, el coche se ha comportado bien, y estamos a dos o tres décimas del de delante", dijo Alonso.
Además, Alonso se mostró "contento de salir por la parte limpia" de la pista. "Hemos probado bastantes salidas durante el fin de semana y no es que haya una gran diferencia, pero supongo que será mejor salir por ahí", señaló.
El bicampeón español considera que su resultado "es normal", el que esperaban en su equipo. "Sin grandes problemas en el coche, a medio segundito de la 'pole'... Dentro de lo malo que es tener a los Red Bull y los McLaren delante, esa diferencia no es tanta si tenemos en cuanta que éste es el mismo coche de Hungría. Eso fue en julio, y ahora, en noviembre, estamos a medio segundo de la 'pole'. Creo que hemos maximizado el potencial que teníamos entonces", dijo.
Fernando Alonso explicó por qué hizo un segundo intento en la tercera ronda (Q3) de la sesión de clasificación: "Teníamos pensado hacer un solo intento, pero como el primero no fue perfecto decidimos hacer un segundo porque la tentación era intentar adelantar".
"No creo que sea una gran penalización haber usado todos los juegos de neumáticos, ya que aquí no hay un desgaste excesivo. Éste no es de esos circuitos en los que se habla de tres o cuatro paradas porque los neumáticos pueden durar unas pocas vueltas... Aquí puede que hagamos dos paradas, como en los últimos grandes premios. El tener un juego más o menos no tiene tanta importancia", agregó.
Pese a haber acabado "bastante cerquita" de los Red Bull y los McLaren, Alonso sabe que "mañana va a ser superdifícil estar en el podio".
"Necesitamos una carrera perfecta y que ellos hagan algo mal. Si salen bien, Button, Hamilton y Vettel en teoría tendrán que estar en el podio. Nosotros tendríamos que pelear con Webber por el cuarto puesto. Si pasa algo con los de delante, algún toque o alguna penalización, ahí estaremos para intentar aprovecharlo", comentó.
