A race over the River Kwai

The rain forest, waterfalls and uncharted caves of Kanchanaburi become a playground for weekend warriors next month as the River Kwai Trophy Adventure Race 2011 returns to the province on March 5. Part of the Amazing Thailand Adventure Race series, the race will set off from the famous bridge over the River Kwai and then take participants through the scenic trails and countryside of Thailand's west. It features biking, running, swimming and kayaking. Visit www.RiverKwaiTrophy.com.

Have a plummy weekend

Spend a "sweet and sour" weekend in Nakhon Nayok, a small province to the East of Bangkok where, until Sunday, local farmers are hosting the annual "Marian Plum Festival" in the park next to City Hall. With more than 100 growers offering their best plums, you can enjoy fruit tasting and a chat. The size of an egg, the marian plum is a tropical fruit with a sweet and sour taste.

On a wing to Bollywood

Travel from Bangkok to Bollywood gets even easier as Bangkok Airways launches direct flights to Mumbai from March 2. The airline will operate six flights weekly (no flying on Tuesday) from Thailand's capital to India's largest city by Airbus A319 with seats in Business and Economy Classes. Flight PG733 departs Bangkok at 10.20pm, and arrives in Mumbai at 1.05am (local time). The return flight leaves Mumbai at 1.55am, and lands in Bangkok at 7.50am. Visit www.BangkokAir.com.

World heritage and wine

Jump into an ox cart and discover Ban Chiang - a Unesco World Heritage Site in Udon Thani province. From February 12 to 24, the archaeological site will host "Ban Chiang: World Heritage" to show off its riches, including Ban Chiang pottery, indigo textiles and local fruit wine. The local treasures will be joined by international cultural shows from as far away as Greece and France.
