FDA – GP2 Asia Series pitches up in Imola. Bianchi fourth in qualifying

Maranello, 18 March – There is still everything to play for in Jules Bianchi’s pursuit of the GP2 Asia title, with the series moving to the renovated Imola circuit, after the Bahrain round had to be cancelled because of political unrest in the country. The Ferrari Driver Academy driver was fourth fastest at the wheel of his Lotus-Art car, in this afternoon’s qualifying session with a time of 1.22.676, which thus sees him start from the second row in the first race, which starts tomorrow at 2 in the afternoon. Qualifying was hotly contested with DAMS’ Romain Grosjean setting the fastest time in 1.27.067 at the very last moment, thus depriving iSport’s Sam Bird (1.27.384) of pole position. Sharing the second row with Jules will be Scuderia Coloni driver Michael Herck, third fastest in 1.27.558. Right from the opening moments of the session the red flags had to come out when the front wing broke on the Lotus-Art of Bianchi’s team-mate Esteban Gutierrez and the track had to be cleared of debris. With two points for pole position, Grosjean has now joined the Ferrari student at the head of the classification. “I’m a bit disappointed,” said Jules after the session. “Especially as it’s reduced the lead I built up after the round in Abu Dhabi. With only two races to go, the title race is still wide open and tomorrow, getting a good start will be vital, as well as doing a good job of looking after the Pirelli tyres.”

Maranello, 18 marzo - Ancora tutto da giocare per Jules Bianchi nella caccia al titolo della GP2 Asia, trasferitasi sul rinnovato circuito di Imola dopo la cancellazione dell’appuntamento in Bahrain a causa delle tensioni politiche scoppiate in quel Paese. Il pilota della Ferrari Driver Academy ha ottenuto il quarto posto sulla vettura schierata dalla Lotus-Art con il tempo di 1.22.676 nelle qualifiche di oggi pomeriggio e partirà così dalla seconda fila nella prima gara, in programma domani alle 14.

Le prove ufficiali sono state teatro di un’accesa lotta fra l’alfiere della DAMS Romain Grosjean che ha siglato il miglior tempo (1.27.067) proprio all’ultimo minuto, soffiando così la pole position a Sam Bird del team iSport (1.27.384). Accanto a Jules sulla seconda fila della griglia ci sarà Michael Herck della Scuderia Coloni, terzo in 1.27.558. Sin dai primi giri, i commissari sono stati costretti ad esporre la bandiera rossa, a causa del cedimento dell'alettone anteriore della seconda Lotus-Art, affidata a Esteban Gutierrez, che ha reso necessaria la rimozione dei detriti dall'asfalto. Con i due punti della pole, Grosjean ha affiancato il ferrarista al comando della classifica. “Sono un po’ deluso”- ha dichiarato Jules alla fine della sessione - “soprattutto perché si è ridotto il mio vantaggio in classifica, conquistato dopo la prova di Abu Dhabi. Con solo due gare a disposizione, la corsa al titolo è tuttavia ancora aperta e domani sarà fondamentale non commettere errori alla partenza, controllando bene il comportamento delle nuove gomme Pirelli”.
