Sergio Perez is not getting carried away with his headline time during the third day of testing at Barcelona on Wednesday.

It was his final day in the car before the first race in Australia and the team sent him out for a qualifying simulation before lunch. Over one flying lap with low fuel and on brand new super-soft tyres he set the fastest time of the week with a 1:21.761.

"For sure it is always very nice to end up P1 in testing," he said. "But tomorrow everybody forgets it and focuses on Melbourne."

Technical director James Key said the team had been impressed by Perez's approach to the simulation run.

"In the morning we started off with some general set up work, and then went into a qualifying practice, which was the first time we had run the car on low fuel," Key said. "This was also the first time for Sergio to go through all those procedures from Q1 to Q3. He did a good and controlled set of laps, setting a time of 1:22.042 minutes on soft tyres and 1:21.761 on the super soft compound."

Perez then tried a race simulation but a KERS problem meant he could not complete the full mileage.

"We did a lot of useful preparation work for the first race weekend," the Mexican added. "Although we could not complete the race simulation because of a technical problem, for me it was an interesting and positive programme. It was my last day of testing. I feel ready and I can't wait to race"
