Explore an ancient and sacred route to Angkor

Culture enthusiasts should not miss ICOMOS Thailand Association's March 19-20 excursion along an ancient route across the Phanom Dongrak Range linking Wimaipura on the Moon River Basin to Angkor of the Khmer empire. In ancient times, the mountain range was considered a sacred place where several Khmer temples were established along watershed lines. Besides the temples, which include Ta Khwai, arokayasala (hospitals) and dharmasala (dharma centres) were built along the route for travellers during the reign of King Jayavarman VII (1125-1215).

On the first day of the excursion, participants will visit Ta Khwai Temple in Surin province and trek on the mountain range before heading to Ta Muen Thom, Ta Muen Tot and Ta Muen temples and the first arokayasala and dharmasala on the route. The next morning, they will enjoy sunrise at Phanom Rung and Muang Tam Khmer temples before visiting Ban Bu Temple, Kuti Rishi and some other arokayasala and dharmasala sites in Buri Ram province. They will then proceed to Phimai Khmer Temple in Nakhon Ratchasima, watch handicrafts being made and enjoy local shopping before returning to Bangkok.

Speakers joining the trip include Bovornvech Rungrujee, deputy director-general of the Fine Arts Department, and Wasu Posayanant, an expert at ICOMOS Thai. Cost is 3,300 baht for ICOMOS members and their families, or 3,600 baht for outsiders. Reservation by March 6 is required, call 02-282-2121 ext 217 or email admin@icomosthai.org.

Spectacular fireworks in the North

Fireworks in Chiang Mai.

Those gazing at the sky over the Ping River on the evening of March 12 will be awed by beautiful fireworks, thanks to the Asahi Super Dry Musical Fireworks Hanabi To Otono Kyouen, held by Chiang Mai province and Boonrawd Trading Company, to celebrate Thai-Japanese relations and promote tourism in the region.

Chiang Mai governor ML Panadda Diskul reveals that the Navarat Bridge area was chosen as the venue after the big success of last year's fireworks show over Rama IX Bridge in Bangkok.

The show put together with the help of Thai fireworks lighting champion Sarawut Taisap lasts 45 minutes.

Also, there will be musical concerts by local band Sincharoen Brothers and several other singers as well as an open-air market where Thai and Japanese vendors will don traditional Lanna costumes or yukata.
