Special report: the World Meteorological Day

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has designated 23 March of every year as the World Meteorological Day to remind its 200 member nations across the world of climate change. Members are encouraged to raise awareness on the issue and report on weather condition and its impact on the lives and properties of people.

The information is expected to be developed for better natural resources management and to protect lives against natural disasters. This year, the WMO has thanked its members for committing to its principles. According to the statistics, between 1994 -2003, the number of lives lost and damage caused by floods or other types of natural disasters has decreased on average.

The WMO is encouraging participants around the world to further commit to reducing carbon emission and carbon-related deaths by half within the next 19 years.

According to the WMO, last year has been recorded as one of the hottest year ever, as hot as 1998 and 2003. In 1998, the WMO found evidence suggesting that global warming would continue to have long-term effect on the world. In the past decade, the global temperature has risen by half a degree higher the average increase recorded between 1998-2003.

To address this issue in Thailand, the Meteorological Department, in collaboration with the Natural Disaster Warning Center, the Faculty of Science of Chulalongkorn University, and the private sector will jointly organize the World Meteorological Day at the Meteorological Department's main hall from 23-24 March, 2011. Those who are interested in the event can contact 02-3994568-74 for more information.

Group Captain Somsak Kowsuwan, Director of the National Disaster Warning Center, said the Center would deliver a statement on the readiness of the country's warning system and public safety.

On display will be simulated public disaster warning systems along with devices and equipment used for the same purpose. The Center also aims at raising awareness among all sectors in Thailand in an attempt to mitigate and prevent damage as a result of natural disasters.
