THAI waives fees for Japan refunds

Thai Airways International (THAI) will allow passengers to refund or change their tickets to Japan free of charge until March 21.

The airline will waive all fees for refunds and flight changes on tickets for travel from March 11 to April 30. Passengers who bought tickets through travel agents are advised to contact the agents directly.

The airline is also offering miles redemption. Those who have reward tickets for routes to and from Japan from March 11 to May 31 can change travel dates and flights without any fees being applied.

Meanwhile, Thais in Japan wanting to travel from Narita or Haneda to Bangkok may purchase one-way, economy-class tickets starting at Bt13,000. The price does not include fuel surcharges, airport tax or insurance.

THAI has also provided tickets for Thai medical teams heading to Japan and shipped blankets donated by the government to those in need in the country via THAI Cargo.

Air China is cutting back flights to Japan over safety worries. The carrier said its concerns were over aftershocks rather than radiation.

Taiwan's EVA Airways cancelled 14 flights scheduled to leave for Tokyo before the end of March and another five to Sapporo, and called off all flights to Sendai until June 30, a spokesman for the firm said.

Other Asian airlines said they would keep flying to Japan as normal, apart from tsunami-hit Sendai.

Several countries in the region sought to dampen public fears over the nuclear emergency, saying they did not think they needed to screen those leaving Japan for radiation, although the situation worsened yesterday with two more blasts at the stricken atomic plant.

Flights to Japan from South Korea, Indonesia, Hong Kong and Singapore are proceeding as scheduled.

Countries including Australia and Thailand have urged their nationals not to go near the damaged plant and to reconsider travel to other areas.
