Wilson takes Porto boss for a spin

Matthew Wilson recruited a new co-driver to complete yesterday's shakedown for Vodafone Rally de Portugal: the FC Porto manager Andre Villas-Boas.

Villas-Boas accompanied Wilson on his final run over the 5.03-kilometre stage at Vale de Judeau on board Wilson’s M-Sport Stobart Ford Fiesta RS WRC.

Afterwards, Villas-Boas said: “That was an amazing experience. I never could imagine how quickly things would happen in the car. I felt completely safe and at ease in the car with Matthew and I’ll happily go out with him again tomorrow. It was out of this world.”

Wilson, who is normally co-driven by fellow Briton Scott Martin, said: “He seemed to trust me and certainly wasn’t afraid. There were some places on the stage where I had to be careful because I couldn’t quite remember where the road went but he got a good idea of what it’s all about. We got up to 160kph at one stage.”

An ardent Manchester United supporter, Wilson added: “I sat behind [England football manager] Fabio Capello when Manchester United played Bolton the other week so I was thinking about giving Andre a few tips. I don’t really follow Portuguese football but I’m sure he doesn’t need any.”

Following the second round of the WRC season in Portugal, Wilson holds 12th overall in the drivers’ standings.
