WRC Academy: The class of 2011. Part two

Twenty drivers have registered for the inaugural FIA WRC Academy so far with more expected to follow prior to the 31 March deadline.

Wrc.com will be publishing profiles of all drivers and co-drivers taking part in the all-new training category during the next few days. Here is part two of the class of 2011.

Matteo Brunello
Nationality: Italian
Date of birth: 12 August 1990
Co-driver: Michele Ferrara
Like many young rally drivers, Brunello’s first taste of four-wheel motorsport came in karting when he was just eight years old. He made his move to rallying in 2009 and one year later had celebrated his best result to date: a class win and a top 12 finish on the challenging Costa Smeralda Rally in Sardinia. Brunello includes Italian rally greats Miki Biaison and Sandro Munari among his influences.

Sergey Karyakin
Nationality: Russian
Date of birth: 25 January 1989
Co-driver: Natalya Potapova
Karyakin will be a rallying novice when he enters the WRC Academy this season. The ex-karter, who has also excelled riding snowmobiles, was inspired to take up rallying by ex-WRC regular Alexander Dorosinskiy, who hails from Karyakin’s hometown of Ekaterinburg. When he’s not competing Karyakin will be studying Heat and Power Engineering at the Ural Federal University.

Egon Kaur
Nationality: Estonian
Date of birth: 20 August 1987
Co-driver: Mait Laidvee
A graduate of supercross, a form of rallycross, Kaur - who started rallying in 2004 - will already have experience of four world championship events under his belt prior to the WRC Academy season getting underway. He will keep busy in between his rallying commitments this year by studying at the Tallinn University of Technology.

Brendan Reeves
Nationality: Australian
Date of birth: 29 August 1988
Co-driver: Rhianon Smyth
Pirelli Star Driver Reeves started out racing karts in 1996 but, by 2005, had switched to rallying and hasn’t looked back since with success in his domestic series and in the Asia Pacific championship. Outside of rallying, Reeves keeps busy by driving trucks for his family’s earthmoving business and working as a driving instructor for a rallying school in his homeland.

Calle Ward
Nationality: Swedish
Date of birth: 7 March 1986
Co-driver: Morten Erik Abrahamsen
A former junior autocross exponent, Ward has been rallying since 2006, achieving considerable success in his native Scandinavia. Following impressive performances in Sweden, he branched out into the Nordic Fiesta SportTrophy in 2010, winning the title in addition to securing top honours in the Nordic Topdriver series. He also took part in the Fiesta SportTrophy International Shootout in the UK late last year where he was the fastest driver.
