ALMS - Tough race in prospect at Long Beach
Maranello 16 April – One month after the American Le Mans Series kicked off at Sebring, the second round is taking place at the Long Beach street circuit in southern California. From a twelve hour race in Florida, now it is time for a two hour event with thirty one cars on the grid. Jaime Melo and Toni Vilander in the Houston-based Risi Competizione team’s Ferrari 458 Italia GT2 car did not not get the qualifying result they were hoping for because of an accident. With Melo at the wheel, the car crashed heavily into the barrier at turn 2, doing irreparable damage to the rear wing, so he had to stop in the pits to the end of the session. Unfortunately, they will now have to start from the back of the grid, with the two other 458 Italia GT2s entered by Extreme Speed Motorsports and crewed by Scott Sharp-Johannes van Overbeek and Ed Brown-Guy Cosmo will start from sixth (1.20.167) and seventh (1.20.176) respectively. Leading the category in the race that gets underway at 16.30 today is the BMW M3 of Dirk Mueller - Joey Hand (1.19.090), ahead of the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 of Oliver Gavin - Jan Magnussen (1.19.137) and the other BMW M3 of Bill Auberlen - Dirk Werner (1.19.447).
ALMS - A Long Beach una gara in salita
Maranello, 16 aprile – Ad un mese dal calcio di inizio di Sebring, l’American Le Mans Series è tornata in pista sulle strade di Long Beach, nel sud della California, per il secondo appuntamento stagionale. Dai dodici giri di lancette della prova disputata in Florida si passa ad una corsa della durata di due ore, che vedrà al via ben trentuno vetture. Un incidente occorso alla 458 Italia GT2 portata in pista da Risi Competizione durante il turno di qualifica appena concluso sullo storico tracciato cittadino, ha impedito ai portacolori del team Ferrari di Houston – Jaime Melo e Toni Vilander – di ottenere un buon piazzamento in griglia. Il violento impatto contro le barriere di protezione della seconda curva ha irreparabilmente danneggiato l’ala posteriore, costringendo il pilota brasiliano, allora al volante, a parcheggiare la vettura nei box sino al termine della sessione. Una partenza dal fondo dello schieramento attende lo sfortunato equipaggio, mentre la sesta e settima piazzola saranno occupate dalle altre due 458 Italia GT2 schierate dal team Extreme Speed Motorports di Scott Sharp – Johannes van Overbeek e Ed Brown – Guy Cosmo, autori del sesto (1.20.167) e settimo (1.20.176) miglior crono. Leader di categoria della corsa, in programma oggi pomeriggio alle 16.30, la BMW M3 di Dirk Mueller - Joey Hand (1.19.090), davanti alla Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 di Oliver Gavin - Jan Magnussen (1.19.137) ed all’altra BMW M3 di Bill Auberlen - Dirk Werner (1.19.447).
