Cambiasso: "Honour yourself and the colours"

APPIANO GENTILE – "After such a long time, we finally had a whole week to work and spend time on details, but it's a week we'd rather not have had; I, or rather we, would have preferred to be playing." Esteban Cambiasso's recognised intellectual honesty was summed up in that sentence, as he spoke to Antonio Bartolomucci, in the interview for Studio Sport which has just been broadcast. The Argentinian midfielder who is approaching his 300th official appearance as a professional in Italy (but, knowing him, he prefers to count the trophies won...), was pleased with the full days of training that Inter have been going through at the Centro Sportivo Angelo Moratti, now that they have more time on their hands. At the same time, however, summed up in that "but" is the frustration of no longer being able to compete in the UEFA Champions League. So much so that when quizzed on Real Madrid v Barca, Cambiasso slunk through, like the intelligent cat he is, not wanting to get involved in the problems of others: "I couldn't see it very well. It's clear that Real's situation at the moment isn't easy, but there are still ninety minutes to play."

Cambiasso is usually very careful and precise when talking about Inter-related issues, which are also his own. He said, for example, that Inter "is on the mend. In the space of two weeks, when we were well on the way back, we suffered two body-blows, but then we went on to win the first leg of the semi-final of the Coppa Italia against Roma and then we beat Lazio in the league; this was a difficult match from the very start and was made even more difficult by what happened on the pitch. Now, he added we must go on to the end, without counting too much on the league table, but being aware that it is crucial for us and for the club, to make the top three places. If we plan things well and play well this is good preparation for the Coppa Italia, where were are still in with a good chance at this stage of the competition." The way a season goes doesn't condition a philosophy of life or of football, alone: "You must always honour yourself and, by honouring yourself, you honour the colours." Always, and regardless of how any particular season is going: "Just as I stressed that we won everything last year for a series of reasons, not one alone, so too do I think there are hundreds of reasons that have contributed to Inter showing more flaws this year. But now is not the time for that; these things can be analysed at the end of the season and our season isn't over yet. Of course, there has been talk of tiredness, and that's quite normal: we played more games than anyone else last season and then had two Super Cups in August. We started preparing before the others knowing that, in December, we had the Club World Cup to play. All those big fixtures take a lot out of you. But, as I said, we can't say that is the only reason this season has gone the way it has. You have to look at the finer details, the individual situations, but now is not the time for that."
