THAILAND TO SET NEW WORLD RECORD IN TRADITIONAL THAI MASSAGE

11 June 2011 at Impact Muang Thong Thani

Thailand’s Ministry of Public Health is working with health and wellness trade associations and private sector operators to set a new world record for Thailand in the massage category.

A total of 2,600 participants will be involved in 1,300 pairings of qualified traditional Thai massage therapists and volunteers during an event that will highlight the art of traditional massage and herbal healing with the use of steamed herbal poultices.

The bid, which is being organized by the Ministry of Public Health Department of Health Service Support, is designed to raise international awareness of various distinctive aspects of Thai culture and traditions related to health and wellness, and will be held on 11 June 2011 at Impact Muang Thong Thani.

An interesting range of health-related product and service offerings from four key provinces — Phuket, Surat Thani, Chiang Mai and Ubon Ratchathani — is being highlighted.

Thailand, with its award-winning spa industry and professional health and wellness service providers, has already gained worldwide recognition as the health and wellness hub of Asia.

The kingdom has particular strengths and capabilities in the health and wellness sector, with some unique offerings based on indigenous folk wisdom and ancient, time-honoured healing techniques.

Traditional Thai massage is noted for its remarkable ability to relieve ailments such as backache, headache, tension and fever through the release of blocked energy lines in the body.

Heat therapy with herbal ingredients is also a distinguishing feature of traditional Thai health and beauty practices. The healing secret in soothing Thai herbal steam is indigenous Thai herbal ingredients such as turmeric, prai, lemongrass, camphor and kaffir lime.

Thai herbal steam boosts the circulation and respiratory system, and improves the complexion. Warm Thai-style herbal compresses are made from medicinal herbs bundled in cloth and heated with steam. The compresses are then used to pound tense muscles and stiff joints, and are administered in combination with traditional massage.

Other highlights of the event:

- Live demonstrations to the highest professional standards of Thai spa, health and wellness products and services

- Exhibition booths featuring certified Thai spa operators and a comprehensive range of health and wellness products and services

The bid to establish a new world record for Thai massage is also designed to further the following objectives:

- Widen the related knowledge pool

- Sharpen technical expertise and strengthen the capabilities and international competitiveness of spa and health and wellness operators and service providers

- Strengthen co-operation and promote effective networking among health and wellness service providers

- Stimulate increased domestic demand and consumption of traditional health and wellness remedies, such as traditional Thai massage, and promote the use of these remedies as part of everyday life

- Encourage health and wellness service providers to undertake professional certification programmes to attain the highest possible standards in product quality and service delivery

- Highlight the extensive range of benefits offered by Thai spas and health and wellness service providers throughout Thailand

The Department of Health Service Support believes that in addition to raising the benchmark for the Thai health and wellness industry, these activities pave the way for the more effective integration of state and private sector efforts. This increases Thailand’s international competitiveness and is consistent with the national policy to establish Thailand as the medical hub of Asia.
