‘Pace! Precision!'

Sixteen stars sweat, two unable to train

“Pace! Precision!” yelled Andries Jonker, showing no mercy to his senior squad. Two days after a stirring 4-1 victory over Schalke and FCB’s return to third spot in the Bundesliga table, the caretaker boss ensured his men broke sweat with a vengeance in Monday’s official training session.

The programme included swift exchanges of passing ending in shots at goal, and practice matches on a reduced sized pitch with and without goalposts. The exercises were designed to school the players in aspects of technique, vision, concentration, and rapid reactions to new in-game situations. The group for the workout comprised sixteen members of the first-team squad, plus guest players Antonio Pangallo and Maximilian Riedmüller from the reserves.

Robben and Schweinsteiger miss out

However, five FCB men were unable to play any part in the session. Arjen Robben sat out the day’s activities with a stomach upset. The Dutch winger reported to the Säbener Strasse facility for treatment rather than training. Bastian Schweinsteiger completed an individual fitness and conditioning session in the performance center. The midfielder took a knock on his foot during the Schalke clash and was advised to sit out the team session as a precaution.

Elsewhere, Ivica Olic (knee surgery) and Hamit Altintop (back) continued their sport rehab programmes. There was positive news of Danijel Pranjic, as the Croatia utility man has all but shaken off a hamstring strain. On Monday, he reported to assistant coach Marcel Bout and fitness specialists Thomas Wilhelmi and Andreas Kornmayer for a final tailored workout. The squad has a day off on Tuesday, with Pranjic slated to resume the team programme on Wednesday.
