Williams to investigate Barrichello issue
Williams fail to score again in the German Grand Prix at the Nurburgring
Williams technical director Sam Michael says the team will investigate the cause of the oil leak that forced Rubens Barrichello to retire from the German Grand Prix.
The experienced Brazilian had started the race from 14th on the grid but made up three places on the opening lap to sit just outside the points in eleventh.
However, despite being keen to carry on, Barrichello was then forced to retire to the pits on the 16th lap when the telemetry showed an oil leak, with the team keen to avoid a full-blown engine failure.
“We were doing quite well after making a good start and were looking comfortable for a two-stop strategy but then the team came on the radio and called me in with an oil leak,” he said. “I wanted to continue but the team said there was no way and that was the right decision. It was slippery out there at the start but the main issue was the cold weather making it difficult to get the temperature into the tyres.”
Barrichello's retirement capped a tough day for the Grove-based team as it failed to score for the eighth time in ten races this season, with Pastor Maldonado taking the flag in 14th after the strategy employed by the team failed to work as planned.
“Unfortunately Rubens was out early with an engine oil leak today; we are still investigating the cause,” Michael admitted. “On Pastor's car we called an early first pitstop that moved him right up the order, however we then had too much tyre wear during the second stint, so it may have hurt the race outcome later on. Once we had that tyre wear we decided to risk doing a longer final stint on the prime tyre and that went against us today.”
