BIG SPEED, BIG CHANCE?

08/07/2011

Firstly today, we should pay special homage to Ferrari; 60 years ago, on 14th July 1951, Gonzalez won the first race for the Scuderia. This is a special weekend for the reds.

Moving back firmly to the present, and this is a big weekend for the black and gold of Lotus Renault GP. It is none other than the British Grand Prix at a new-look, very polished Silverstone circuit.

On arrival, the words ‘Welcome to Silverstone’ greet you. A bit like the words ‘Welcome to Anfield’ that greet many a football team when they walk down the dressing room tunnel at Liverpool Football Club, these words echo in your ear. These words tell you that you’ve arrived somewhere big, And we have. As we reported in yesterday’s blog, this is a race with all the prestige, the history, and the memories of big races from times past.

So, what about LRGP’s chances, then? Well, Silverstone is a track with a combination of high and medium speed corners, a contrast to the more recent street races in Monaco, Montreal and Valencia. How will this suit the team? Well, if you look at our results so far this season, we’ve performed better at the faster circuits. A good sign, is it not?

In addition, we are encountered with the new rule changes that the FIA have imposed; the tweaks to the engine management rules which will see the off-throttle blowing of exhaust gases limited. The key questions will be how much downforce will be lost by this, and how much the loss of downforce will affect the balance of the car.

The answers we will find out over the course of the next three days.
