HELLO TO A NEW SILVERSTONE

07/07/2011

Lotus Renault GP team personnel could have been excused for being a little confused as they headed into Silverstone circuit this morning as there have been some significant changes for 2011.

Last year it was a new layout for Silverstone, this year it’s a new pit and paddock complex, called the Silverstone Wing.

Costing just under £28 million, the Silverstone Wing features three large halls, a conference facility, business centre and a 100-seat auditorium, and provides the largest covered exhibition space between London and Birmingham

Measuring 390 metres in length, the Silverstone Wing was built in 54 weeks from the end of April 2010, to May of 2011, with the total man hours in the construction phase of the project reaching 395,000 through over 200 personnel worked on the site at any one time.

The roof area spans 9,700 square metres, whilst the height of the ‘blade’ measures 30 metres. 1,200 tonnes of steel has been erected in and around the building,

There are 41 garages covering 6,200 square metres, with a media centre above which covers 2,780 square metres. The media centre even has its own café where the delights range from fresh fruit salad to homemade chocolate brownies.

For LRGP the new Silverstone paddock means a new working environment, whilst for Nick and Vitaly, it’s a new start / finish line, a new order for the corner numbers and a new pit entry and exit which they will first experience in tomorrow’s free practice one.
