HUNGARIAN GRAND PRIX PREVIEW
on Jul 26, 2011
Hungary was a very happy hunting ground for us last season, as Mark Webber romped to victory with a winning margin of almost 20 seconds.
While the Australian was celebrating his fourth win of the season, team-mate Sebastian Vettel overcame a difficult afternoon to finish third. It had been a hectic, and classic race, with crashes, Safety Cars, a rogue wheel bouncing down the pit lane, hitting (thankfully not injuring) a mechanic, Michael Schumacher just millimetres away from causing Rubens Barrichello some very serious problems and plenty of frantic pitting as the leading pack desperately tried to gain an advantage on a track which provides few opportunities to overtake.
The double podium was preceded in 2009 by Mark finishing third, in what’s becoming a favourite track for the team.
The big points hauls of the last couple of seasons followed two without any. Our only other pre-2009 points were collected by David Coulthard, who drove to fifth place in 2006.
The Hungaroring, which made its F1 debut in 1986, is basically a street circuit without the houses: tight, twisty and almost impossible to overtake around. It’s one of the slowest circuits on the calendar so a good high downforce set-up, similar to that used in Monaco is important. The circuit has 14 turns on its 4.381km lap. The race is 70 laps, a distance of 306.630km. Michael Schumacher has the most number of wins here, with four, the German also holds the track record of 1:19.071, set in 2004.
The track is 20km north of Budapest, a beautiful city known as the ‘Paris of central Europe’. As it’s always hot during race weekend, you have the perfect excuse to quench your thirst in the multitude of outdoor bars and clubs. Conveniently, there’s also a water park at the track, for those who remember to pack their swimming costumes.
