Summer Wrooom 2011
Fernando Alonso is busy at the summer retreat at Madonna de Campiglio, where he declared that ?we can?t throw in the towel with regards to the final standings until they have been mathematically decided.?
It is time for some relaxation at Formula 1, and Ferrari is enjoying its summer Wrooom at Madonna di Campiglio. In addition to coming together as a team, every racing team enjoys other sports, like cycling and hiking. Fernando Alonso has even dared to try his hand at cooking.
“Let’s be realistic: it (winning the World Championship) is difficult, almost impossible. “But we can’t throw in the towel with regards to the final rankings until they have been mathematically decided,” said Alonso, speaking at the Ferrari event held in northern Italy.
“We are Ferrari and it would be unthinkable for us to spend half the championship without a goal. For now, let’s start by trying to win the eight races left to go (...) Singapore is a special place for me. Two wins and a podium in three appearances is a record that I do not intend to ruin,” he added.
The Spanish driver recognizes that this is the “happiest” time of his career, being able to compete with Ferrari, and trusts that next year “everything will be different” at the Italian scuderia, which is the third-ranked team in the championship.
“I’ve already said it: with the new technical management we are dealing with the rules like we had never done before. Less hesitation, more creativity. I notice an exceptional confidence on the team,” Alonso noted.
The Spaniard stated that he would have no problem with the British driver Lewis Hamilton, although he hopes that his current teammate, Brazil’s Felipe Massa, stays on the Italian team for a long time to come.
“If Hamilton came I would say to him, ‘My, look who we have here.’ I won't deny that in 2007 at McLaren there were problems. In the end we each decided to go our separate ways. Now the fight would be clean, fair. I learned a lot that year. Dealing with a strong driver and having the opportunity to exchange impressions and ideas increased by technical expertise,” Alonso explained.
“Otherwise, if I think about ten years ago, and the things that I am able to do now, it seems crazy to me. I was an ambitious kid who was fighting with a car that was not very competitive. I’ve worked with teammates who have taught me a lot, each in their own way,” he added.
