At last….we don’t have to pretend to be enjoying a holiday when all we want to do is go racing. It would not really matter where we went back to work, but somehow, getting back to the serious business of the Formula 1 World Championship at one of the greatest tracks on the calendar, makes it seem even more exciting. The only downside is a plague of wasps that has already stung quite a few people in the paddock. Generally, it’s a case of everyone back on duty, apart from Nick Heidfeld, whom as you may have read is now being replaced by Bruno Senna at the team everyone knows as Renault, but now calls “Black Lotus” to distinguish it from “Green Lotus.”
Just about every driver in the paddock has been asked to comment about the fact this race marks 20 years since a certain Michael Schumacher made his debut in Formula 1. Actually, if we want to be pedantic, we could point out that Rubens Barrichello has actually been around the paddock for longer, as the Brazilian made his debut at the start of the ’93 season, one and a half years later than the German, but unlike Michael has not had a sabbatical period.
Sitting next to the seven times world champion in today’s FIA press conference was our own Sebastien Buemi, who started off explaining what he had done during the summer break. “I went to Orlando and then to Miami for a few days, then I came back on the 14th to go back into training for at least a week to prepare as well as possible for Spa,” said our Swiss driver. “The rest of the season as we know, Singapore and all the next races, are going to be very hot and you have got to be fit. It was a good break and I could enjoy myself a bit but it is very good to be back here as Spa is a fantastic circuit.
“We have been working really hard with the team to try and improve the car as much as possible. I would say the last race in Budapest was really good for us as we finished eighth and tenth so we scored a lot of points for the team. Hopefully now we can have a good weekend as well. We know in Spa everything is possible with the weather and also that can change really quickly.”
