Jenson Button takes on locals at private Dutch ‘Grand Prix’
5000 residents watch Vodafone Netherlands event
Fresh from his great second place finish at the Santander Italian GP at Monza, Jenson Button was in the Limburg village of Roggel driving in a private Grand Prix for residents.
While Jenson was racing the streets of the pretty Dutch village to promote the launch of Vodafone Netherlands new ‘Thuis’ superfast fibre optic services with, he was being chased by three locals, driving the same track on simulators.
The 5,000 tickets for the free event, which was only open to locals, were snapped up in three minutes and the crowds watched as Jenson fired up the 2008 championship-winning Vodafone McLaren Mercedes MP4-23 and completed the circuit in 61s.
Jenson didn’t get everything his own way however. One of the challengers, Roy Heijmans, took advantage of local ‘track’ knowledge and recorded a time of 53s on the simulator to take the chequered flag!
