Here we are at Magic Monza, one of the highlights of the season. The circuit on the outskirts of Milan might only have five corners, but the royal park is just brimming with motor sport memories and atmosphere. For Scuderia Toro Rosso it is of course our home race and the whole team travelled up from Faenza by road and a three hour journey made a pleasant change from the usual mad scramble to get to an airport on time and deal with the delights of modern air travel.
Red Bull is famous for its Young Driver programme, but if you were looking around the Energy Station in the paddock this afternoon, you might have thought the athletes were getting even younger, but, actually, most of the youngsters were kids of team members who had sneaked their families in for a quick look round before the action begins. In fact, over the next three days, around eighty Toro Rosso employees will be coming to cheer on Sébastien and Jaime, as they are being provided with seats in a prime position, the exit to the Ascari chicane.
Our two drivers have been in this part of Italy for a couple of days already and on Wednesday they took part in a wakeboarding event organised by Red Bull Italy. It took place at Idroscalo, a lake on the outskirts of Milan, that’s devoted to watersports. For the wakeboarding, there is a giant overhead gantry that forms a huge oval and our two drivers duly hung onto ropes which pulled them around over the waves. Séb had tried his hand at this exciting sport before, but Jaime was an absolute beginner. Luckily, they had an expert instructor on hand in the form of 13 year old Georgia Gregorio. Despite her tender years, the Italian youngster is no novice as the Red Bull athlete recently clinched her second Wakeboarding World Championship title. After a couple of hours, our two drivers were beginning to pick up the skill and both said they were keen to try again whenever the opportunity arose.
