iWitness in Italy: Saturday

We have a champion in our midst! Many congratulations to AT&T Williams test driver Valtteri Bottas, who took the GP3 Championship today. He won the feature race at Monza by 0.3s from championship rival James Calado and he cannot now be overhauled in tomorrow’s sprint race. “It feels fantastic,” said Valtteri. “I had a difficult start to the season, but it’s gone really well since then.”
It was our final Oris motorhome dinner of the season this evening. Once again Pastor Maldonado held court, regaling the guests with tales of qualifying, but unlike at Spa-Francorchamps, there was no appearance from Lewis Hamilton halfway through dinner!
Good to hear that Rubens Barrichello is still loved by the Italian Tifosi. He won two races at Monza for Ferrari, and while walking into the track this morning he was asked by a passionate fan draped in red: “When are you coming back to Ferrari?” Sorry, guys, he’s an AT&T Williams driver now!
All of F1’s big cheeses were in the Monza paddock today. In no particular order (don’t want to annoy anyone? – Ed): Luca Montezemolo, Dietrich Mateschitz and Ron Dennis were all here, and Montezemolo was even spotted coming out of the McLaren motorhome with a smile on his face. Can you imagine that happening a few years ago?
