Petit Le Mans – Ferrari immediately on pole at Road Atlanta
Maranello, 1 October – The Ferrari 458 Italia GT2 of Giancarlo Fisichella, Gianmaria Bruni and Pierre Kaffer (AF Corse) took pole position at the US circuit of Road Atlanta, in Georgia ahead of today’s 1,000-mile Petit Le Mans – one of the most prestigious dates in the American Le Mans Series and the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup calendars – which will get under way at 11.30 local time. The Italian team, which has already triumphed in the Le Mans Series, now aims to take victory in the final round of the ILMC, which will be replaced in 2012 by the new FIA World Endurance Championship. The best time set by Bruni (1.19.219 ) during the 15-minute qualifying session therefore makes for a perfect starting point as the trio bids to maintain its lead in this important series. Of the six 458 Italias on the grid for the GTE PRO category, Jaime Melo, Toni Vilander and Raphael Matos – at the wheel of the Ferrari run by Risi Competizione – will start from the second row. Melo set the fourth best time (1.19.299) despite having completed only six laps as he preferred to save tyres for the start of the race. In the GTE-AM class pole position went to the F430 GTC prepared by AF Corse for Robert Kauffman, Rui Aguas and Justin Bell to confirm how the much-decorated Ferrari remains one of the cars to beat.
