Pole positions decided for the Ferrari Challenge Asia Pacific at Sepang
Sepang, 1 October – An intense day of official testing has just finished at the Sepang circuit ahead of the Asia Pacific series race in the Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli. This event will take place over the course of the weekend on the Malaysian track that it is a regular venue for important global motorsport events from Formula 1 to Moto GP. There were more than twenty 458 Challenge cars in action today on the track as the fourth round of the year began. It will conclude tomorrow with the two scheduled races at 11.45 and 15.20 local Malaysian times. Variable weather conditions made the sessions even more spectacular and played a decisive role in the battle for pole position.
The rain that fell at the start of the action in fact disrupted the whole first session, requiring everyone to use wet tyres to test out the track as similar weather was forecast for the following session of qualifying. In the first session the best time overall was recorded by the South Korean driver Tack Sung Kim, who is entered in the Coppa Shell. He produced an excellent performance that saw him prevail over the more experienced competitors in the Trofeo Pirelli. With a time of 2.25.049 Tack Sung duly added the first pole position of the day with an impressive gap over the Australian Steve Wyatt (2.28.020) and the Indonesian Renaldi Martin Hutasoit (2.28.868), both competing in the Coppa Shell. The quickest driver in the Trofeo Pirelli was Japan’s Hisamori Hayashi, who set the second fastest time overall with a lap of 2.26.457, followed by his compatriot Hisao Shigeta (2.26.865) and the Singapore driver, Ringo Chong (2.27.752).
The second session of qualifying, that took place on a track that was still damp due to the copious rain that fell in the first session, saw Ringo Chong finish as the top driver. He set the fastest time of the day (2.14.075) to finish ahead of Eric Hsiang- Jeffery Lee (2.14.271) and Hisamori Hayashi (2.15.151). Among the gentlemen drivers of the Coppa Shell, Renaldi Martin Hutasoit (2.16.031) ended the session on top, followed by Steve Wyatt (2.16.325) and Gregory Teo (2.16.548).
The drivers of the Ferrari Challenge APAC will return to action tomorrow for the two races scheduled in the series calendar. This weekend at Sepang will in fact be the decisive round for the title race, with the prizes presented at the Mugello World Finals, scheduled for the weekend of November 6.
