GP2 is moving even closer to Formula One by introducing new tyre rules and adopting the same points system for the 2012 season.
In a bid to further cement its position as the feeder series to F1, next year will see both a prime and option compound tyre available to drivers. Each driver will have three sets of prime (harder) tyres, and one set of options (softer) over the race weekend, with one set of primes having to be saved for the Sunday sprint race. This leaves two sets of primes and the one set of options to be used whenever the driver wants throughout free practice, qualifying and the race.
The move will help drivers develop more strategies, having to make a decision as to whether to run the option tyres in qualifying for the best grid position, or save them for the feature race in order to gain more pace. The feature race includes a mandatory pit stop when at least two tyres must be changed.
In addition to the tyre rule, the series will be using the same points scoring system as Formula One in the feature race, with the top ten scoring points from 25 for a victory down to 1 for tenth place. The top eight will still be reversed for the sprint race grid, with points available down to eighth in the order of 15, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2, 1. Pole position will now be worth four points, and two points awarded for the fastest lap. The same regulations will be implemented in GP3.
