- Hey, I haven't even seen the new 911 in Thai showrooms yet...
While the all-new 911 Carrera will land on Thai shores next February, Porsche has announced this week the second variation of the 911 following the Coupe: the Cabriolet due a month later in March.
Cabrio derv is second in 991 series.
As ever, the Cabriolet will carry a price premium over the Coupe by being around 10% dearer. This means that prices in Thailand for the Cabriolet will start at around 12.5 million baht for the normal Carrera and 14 million baht for the go-faster Carrera S.
- Are there any novelties in the Cabriolet?
Yes, and it's in the roof. Porsche says that the hood frame for the canvas-top is made from magnesium in a bid to reduce weight. Porsche hasn't disclosed the exact figures in the Cabriolet's weight regimen, although expect its performance to be more superior than before and very similar to the Coupe.
The 350hp 3.4-litre flat-six unit for the Carrera and 400hp 3.8-litre variation for the Carrera S are identical in both the Coupe and Cabriolet.
- What's coming next?
Oh, expect a raft of them, as Porsche (and Lamborghini) have become adept at squeezing out so many derivatives from a single basic vehicle architecture.
The next most obvious 911s are the all-wheel-drive models carrying the Carrera 4 and Carrera 4S badges. Interestingly, many people here in Thailand like these two specific 911s for their driving security derived from four-wheel-drive traction. But when they are coming is another thing.
- What about the Turbo?
It will be a while before the 911 icon in all-new form arrives. But we hear that its power is set to exceed 500hp in 991 (the codename for today's all-new 911 series) form and, of course, far more than that in Turbo S trim.
The Weissach boys are unlikely to let their egos go just like that amid this year's facelift of the Nissan GT-R. The giant-slayer from Japan has just received a power boost of 530hp for its 3.8-litre twin-turbo V6 engine _ and is half the price of the 20 million baht 911 Turbo.
Spyder goes RWD.
Bull continues breeding
Lamborghini's ageing Gallardo has again spawned another variant in the guise of a purist's supercar.
This time, it's the LP550-2 Spyder which, in essence, is the open-top version of the Valentino Balboni edition of the LP550-2 fixed-top coupe.
As its badge implies, the LP550-2 Spyder gets a 550hp 5.2-litre V10 engine driving just two wheels _ the rear ones. There's either a six-speed manual or automated manual gearbox to choose from.
