Fernando Alonso, who finished fourth in the Brazilian Grand Prix, declared that 2011 had been a “spectacular” year, despite giving the season an overall rating of between five and six out of ten.
“It has been a spectacular and unforgettable year in many ways, with spectacular starts, amazing pitstops, spectacular manoeuvres and overtaking, like today. And so the year itself has been fantastic, and this race sums all that up in general,” said Alonso, as he looked back over the season.
Third in the world championship which was from start to finish and for the second year running dominated by Germany's Sebastian Vettel (Red Bull), Alonso was one of the key figures in the final round of the year, although he was ultimately denied the podium place which had seemed to be within his grasp.
Commenting on Button's revenge, Alonso suggested that given his car's performance during the year and the forecast of rain, as opposed to the hot, dry track on which the Brazilian Grand Prix was raised, he had “no particular feelings” about being passed by the Briton.
As for the rating he would give to the season, the Spanish driver commented that “as the Chairman said a week ago, the season would get a 5 or 6 out of 10. For Ferrari to win one race during the season (his victory in the British Grand Prix) is not enough for a whole championship. And failing to fight for the championship itself is not enough”.
“Making practically no mistakes and getting the most out of the car every weekend, if we can do something like that next year with a car which is five times faster than this one we would have a good chance of winning,” stressed Alonso, looking ahead to next season
The correction to the wind tunnel for the race car which, according to Alonso , cost Ferrari the 2011 season was “the most positive aspect, to be corrected” for the coming year.
“There is a feeling that this was a bad year because of the huge demands placed on Ferrari and on me, but we need to look at what we did with this less competitive car,” he pointed out.

Fernando Alonso, que ha terminado en la cuarta posición en el Gran Premio de Brasil, ha afirmado que 2011 ha sido un año "espectacular", a pesar de poner a la temporada una calificación de entre 5 y 6 .
"Este año fue espectacular e irrepetible en muchos aspectos, con salidas espectaculares, paradas geniales, maniobras y adelantamientos espectaculares como el de hoy. Por tanto el año en sí ha sido fantástico y esta carrera resume todo eso en general", señaló Alonso al hacer un balance de la temporada.
Tercero en el campeonato que dominó de principio a fin, por segundo año consecutivo, el alemán Sebastian Vettel (Red Bull), Alonso fue uno de los principales protagonistas de la última prueba del año, pero se quedó sin el premio del podio, que pareció siempre a su alcance.
Sobre la revancha que se tomó Button, Alonso apuntó que después del desempeño de su coche durante el año y la previsión de una jornada de lluvia, diferente del calor y la pista seca con los que se corrió el Gran Premio de Brasil, no sintió "nada especial" al ser rebasado por el británico.
En cuanto a la calificación de la temporada, el español comentó que la "nota de la temporada es como lo dijo el presidente hace una semana, un 5 ó un 6. Para Ferrari ganar una carrera en la temporada (con él en el Gran Premio de Gran Bretaña) es demasiado poco en un campeonato entero. Y no luchar por el campeonato es demasiado poco".
"No cometer prácticamente ningún fallo y extraer el máximo del coche todos los fines de semana y si repitiésemos algo parecido el año que viene con un coche cinco veces más rápido que éste tendríamos muchas opciones de ganar", subrayó Alonso con vistas a la próxima temporada.
La corrección del "túnel del viento" en el monoplaza, que según Alonso llevó a Ferrari a perder el año 2011, fue "lo más positivo, para corregir", en el año venidero.
"Hay la sensación de que fue un mal año por la exigencia extrema a Ferrari y hacia mí, pero tenemos ver lo que hicimos con este coche menos competitivo", puntualizó.
