Fernando Alonso, who will start from fifth place on the grid at the Brazilian Grand Prix on Sunday, claimed that his place in qualifying was to be expected given his car's condition throughout the season.
“We don't feel either excited or sad. It was the expected position, although fifth place, while it may seem routine and straightforward, is not so easy,” indicated the 30-year-old driver in the pitlane of the Interlagos circuit in São Paulo.
The Spanish racer will be on the third row alongside Germany's Nico Rosberg (Mercedes) and behind the Red Bull duo of champion Sebastian Vettel and Australian Mark Webber, as well as the two McLaren drivers, Britain's Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton.
Germany's Vettel, this year's champion, set a time of one minute, eleven point 918 seconds in the third round of qualifying, claiming his fifteenth pole position of the Grand Prix season, and with it the overall record for one season.
For Alonso, the feeling “is the same as in the last few races, and the same feeling I had before heading out on the track. Nothing special. You know very well what the objectives are and more or less your position under normal conditions, in the dry, and on a normal track as we had”.
“Sometimes you get a better feeling than others, but our position has always remained the same: fourth, fifth or sixth,” he emphasised.
He did, however, find some comfort in the fact that it could be “a positive feeling, as the Mercedes were a danger in free practice, and proved to be very fast, above all (Germany's Nico) Rosberg, and we knew they could be a threat against the clock”.
The Spaniard mentioned the forecast of rain for Sunday's race. “We know that if it does not rain we will finish fifth or fourth. It depends on what happens to the others. If it rains we could make the podium, or finish eighth. We have no idea. And with the championships already decided and nothing else to fight for, that question mark could help us out,” he suggested.
Alonso nonetheless pointed out that he has always found it “tough going” on wet tracks this season with “problems warming up the tyres”, as at Silverstone, when he won the British Grand Prix after the rain had passed.
As for tyre performance, the Spaniard had this to say: “they have suited me well, both types. They were better prepared than yesterday. I needed to warm up,” he said, while remarking on the “slight degradation” in Q1 and Q2.
“If the race is in the dry then we will definitely have plenty of stops,” suggested the Spaniard, who ruled out any type of special strategy in the fight for the runners-up spot.
“I won't be thinking about that. It depends how the race goes. No matter what happens tomorrow, I am very clear about how this year has gone, where the car is and where I am in the drivers' standings. I will remain very happy with 2011, but obviously I was competing to be world champion,” he declared.

Fernando Alonso, que ocupará el domingo la quinta posición en la parrilla de salida del Gran Premio de Brasil, ha afirmado que el lugar en la clasificación era el esperado por las condiciones que mostró su coche durante toda la temporada.
"No tenemos ni emoción ni tristezas, era una posición esperada, aunque el quinto lugar, a pesar de que parezca lo normal y que parezca fácil, no es tan fácil", señaló el piloto de 30 años en los garajes del autódromo Interlagos, de Sao Paulo.
El piloto asturiano ocupará la tercera fila, al lado del alemán Nico Rosberg (Mercedes) y por detrás del campeón Sebastian Vettel y del australiano Mark Webber, ambos de Red Bull, y de los dos pilotos de McLaren, los británicos Jenson Button y Lewis Hamilton.
El alemán Vettel, el campeón de este año, marcó un minuto, once segundos y 918 milésimas durante la tercera ronda de la sesión de clasificación, completando su decimoquinta primera posición en la parrilla de salida de los grandes premios, récord absoluto de 'poles' para una misma temporada.
Para Alonso, la sensación "es la misma de las últimas carreras y la misma sensación que tenía antes de salir a la pista, nada especial. Sabes muy bien cuáles son los objetivos y cuál es más o menos tu posición en condiciones normales, de seco, en una pista normal como la hemos tenido".
"A veces tienes mejor sensación, otras veces peor, pero la posición siempre ha sido la misma: cuarto, quinto o sexto", subrayó.
Sin embargo, rescató que puede ser "una sensación positiva, pues los Mercedes habían sido un peligro en las sesiones libres, se habían mostrado muy rápidos, sobre todo (el alemán Nico) Rosberg, y sabíamos que en la crono podrían ser una amenaza".
El asturiano se refirió al pronóstico de lluvia para la carrera del domingo. "Sabemos que si no llueve acabaremos quintos o cuartos. Depende de lo que le pase a los demás. Si llueve podemos hacer podio o ser octavos. No tenemos ni idea. Y con los campeonatos definidos y por nada que luchar ese punto interrogativo nos puede venir bien", apuntó.
No obstante, Alonso aclaró que siempre le tocó "sufrir" con las pistas mojadas en la temporada, con "problemas para calentar los neumáticos", como en Silverstone, cuando ganó el Gran Premio de Gran Bretaña después de que pasara la lluvia.
En cuanto al rendimiento de los neumáticos, el español indicó: "me han ido bien, los dos tipos. Estaban mejor preparados que ayer. Me hacía falta calentarlos", dijo, aunque comentó el "poquito de degradación" en las Q1 y Q2.
"Si la carrera fuese en seco seguramente tendríamos muchas paradas", vaticinó el español, que descartó algún tipo de estrategia especial para luchar por el subcampeonato.
"No pensaré en él. Depende de cómo vaya la carrera. Independientemente de lo que pase mañana, sé muy bien cómo ha sido este año, dónde está el coche y dónde estoy yo en el mundial de pilotos. Me quedaré muy contento con 2011, pero obviamente competía para ser campeón del mundo", aseveró.
