Fernando Alonso commented that he believes that the rain forecast for Sunday could help the race strategy.
“In the dry I don't think we will be as fast as on other tracks. We had a few more problems than expected on Friday in terms of car performance, we couldn't get grip at the rear with all the changes we were able to make,” indicated the Spaniard after the second practice session.
For Alonso, “if it rains on Saturday or on Sunday that could be welcome, but it does not mean that it will necessarily work in our favour. Even the problem we have with warming up the tyres, if it rains normally we find that more difficult, but we know that in the dry we will finish fifth or sixth”.
“So if it rains we might do better or worse, and that uncertainty is welcome,” concluded the two-time world champion.
Alonso finished sixth in the first free practice, which was dominated by Australia's Mark Webber (Red Bull), and was forced to abandon on his twenty-sixth lap following engine trouble, while in the second session, led by Britain's Lewis Hamilton (McLaren), he finished fourth.
Regarding the engine fault on his last lap during the first free practice session, Alonso revealed: “we don't have an exact answer and we won't find out this weekend. We will have to wait to take the engine back to Italy, open it up and see which part broke”.
The Spaniard explained that the engine he used during the first practice session was already “at the end” of its racing life, while in the second session he used another which was “at the mileage limit”, leaving in reserve the “newest engine we have left”, out of all eight allowed for season, for Saturday's sessions.
Looking ahead to Saturday, Alonso was unhappy about the lack of aerodynamics from the car in the second sector, but believes that this problem will be sorted out for the design planned by the team for 2012.
At the Interlagos circuit Alonso could claim his eleventh podium finish of the season.

Fernando Alonso ha afirmado que confía en que la lluvia prevista para el domingo pueda favorecer la estrategia de carrera.
"En seco no creo que seamos tan rápidos como en otros circuitos. Hemos tenido un viernes con algunos problemas más de lo esperado en cuanto al comportamiento del coche, no hemos conseguido tener agarre en la parte trasera con todos los cambios que hemos podido hacer", señaló el español después del segundo ensayo.
Para Alonso, "si llueve el sábado o el domingo puede ser algo bienvenido, pero eso no quiere decir que nos vaya a favorecer siempre. Incluso por el problema de calentamiento de neumáticos que tenemos, si llueve, normalmente nos suele ir peor, pero sabemos que en seco estaremos quintos o sextos".
"Por tanto, si llueve, podemos estar mejor o peor y esa incógnita es bienvenida", sentenció el bicampeón mundial.
Alonso terminó sexto en el primer entrenamiento libre, dominado por el australiano Mark Webber (Red Bull) y debió abandonar en su vigésima sexta vuelta después de tener un problema con el motor, mientras que en la segunda sesión, liderada por el británico Lewis Hamilton (McLaren), ocupó el cuarto lugar.
Sobre la avería del motor en su última vuelta durante el primer entrenamiento libre, Alonso apuntó: "no tenemos la respuesta exacta y ni la sabremos este fin de semana, vamos a tener que esperar que el motor llegue a Italia, se abra, y veamos que pieza se ha roto".
El asturiano explicó que el motor que usó en el primer entrenamiento ya tenía una vida útil de carrera "acabada" y en la segunda sesión utilizó otro con "límite de kilometraje", dejando como reserva el "motor más nuevo que ha quedado", de los ocho permitidos en la temporada, para disputar las pruebas del sábado.
Para la jornada del sábado, Alonso lamentó la falta de aerodinámica del segundo sector del coche, pero confió en que ese problema sea subsanado con el monoplaza que la escudería proyecta para 2012.
En el circuito de Interlagos, Alonso podría conseguir su undécimo podio de la temporada.
