Raffaele Marciello on track at Alcaniz in a Formula Renault 3.5
While waiting to finalise plans for his 2012 season, Ferrari Driver Academy driver Raffaele Marciello is making the most of any opportunities in autumn testing to add to his technical understanding. Thanks to the Comtec team, Raffaele was on track today with the Formula Renault 3.5 Dallara at the Spanish Alcaniz circuit, putting in some good lap times without making any mistakes.
In the half day available to him, Marciello completed 41 laps, setting a strong fourth best time at the end of the morning session in 1.44.288. Raffaele was pleased with his performance. “It was a very positive session,” he said at the end of the busy session. “It’s the first time I’ve tried a Renault 3.5 and I had never driven at this track before. On top of that, the track was wet at first, ending in sunny weather.
“I did the first few laps on rain tyres and immediately got a good feel for the car. I was impressed by the aerodynamic downforce, which is much higher than the single seaters I’ve driven before. The lap times were immediately encouraging and in the wet I was always among the quickest. Then the track began to dry out, so we adapted the set-up and fitted dry tyres. In these conditions, my best lap was also very good, especially given there was a lot of traffic when I did my fastest lap.”
With the Alcaniz test over, Marciello must now make plans for his 2012 race season. “It will be a decision taken along with the FDA group that works with me,” explained Raffaele. “Given that I’m not yet 17, there’s no sense in rushing things and I think the most logical decision would be to go for the Formula 3 Euro Series. It’s a great opportunity to see how I fare in an International series, making the most of all the experience I gained in Formula 3 this year in the Italian championship.”

In attesa di definire i programmi relativi alla stagione 2012, il pilota del Ferrari Driver Academy Raffaele Marciello sta sfruttando tutte le possibilità offerte dai test autunnali per ampliare il suo bagaglio tecnico. Grazie alla disponibilità del team Comtec, Raffaele è sceso in pista oggi con la Dallara di Formula Renault 3.5 sulla pista spagnola di Alcaniz, ottenendo importanti riscontri cronometrici e senza commettere alcun errore.
Nella mezza giornata a disposizione Marciello ha coperto 41 giri, ottenendo un ottimo quarto tempo al termine della sessione del mattino: 1.44.288. Il crono ha ampiamente soddisfatto Raffaele, che ha così commentato il suo breve ma intenso test: “E’ stata una sessione molto positiva, perché era la prima volta che salivo su una Formula Renault 3.5 e su un tracciato che non avevo mai visto in precedenza. In più abbiamo iniziato le prove con la pista bagnata ed è terminata con il sole”.
“I primi giri li ho percorsi con gomme ‘rain’, ed ho subito trovato un ottimo feeling con la monoposto. Mi ha impressionato favorevolmente il carico aerodinamico, molto elevato rispetto alle monoposto che avevo guidato prima di oggi. I riscontri cronometrici sono stati subito incoraggianti, e sul bagnato sono sempre stato nelle prime posizioni. Poi la pista si è progressivamente asciugata, così abbiamo adattato il set-up della monoposto e montato le gomme da asciutto. Anche in queste condizioni il miglior tempo che ho ottenuto è stato molto buono, soprattutto considerando che nel mio giro più veloce c’era un notevole traffico in pista”.
Terminato il test di Alcaniz, per Marciello si apre ora la fase di pianificazione dei programmi sportivi 2012. “Sarà una scelta che maturerà insieme allo gruppo di lavoro FDA che mi segue – ha spiegato Raffaele – visto che devo ancora compiere diciassette anni non ha senso bruciare le tappe, e credo che la scelta più logica sia quella di puntare sulla Formula 3 Euro Series. E’ un’ottima chance per misurarmi in un contesto internazionale, potendo però mettere a frutto l’esperienza che ho maturato quest’anno in Formula 3 nel campionato italiano”.
