Abu Dhabi, a bittersweet weekend for Sergio “Checo” Pérez

After the first practice rounds where “Checo” Pérez finished 16 in the first round and 11th in second, it was expected he would finish in the points zone at the Yas Marina Circuit for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. This idea was confirmed when he finished the qualifying sessions, positioning for the sixth row, in the 11th position.
After the qualifying sessions, Sergio Pérez was happy and satisfied with the results, which were much better than what the team expected. This is a difficult layout to overtaking so to be among the first positions it’s an advantage on the way to the points zone.
Right after starting off he had already won two positions and in turn 7 of the first lap he had a contact with Adrian Sutil, this damaged his front wing and had to pit early to change it. He came back to the race in the 23rd position and lap after lap he overtook his way up finishing in the 11th position.
He knows that the strategy the team had set had been good to get the results they needed; however, his early pit stop complicated everything and after 39 laps and a superb overtaking maneuver with Vitaly Petrov he positioned 10th. Unfortunately he started having problems with his KERS and despite fighting over the 10th position with his teammate, Kamui Kobayashi, he couldn’t keep it, finishing 11th.

Después de las primeras prácticas libres, donde “Checo” Pérez había conseguido finalizar 16 en la P1 y 11 en la P2, se esperaba que pudiera entrar en la zona de puntos en el circuito de Yas Marina durante el Gran Premio de Abu Dhabi. Esta suposición tomó fuerza después de la calificación, donde consiguió colocarse en la sexta fila de la parrilla de salida, en la onceava posición.
Tras la sesión de calificación, Sergio Pérez estaba contento con los resultados, pues eran mejores de los que el equipo esperaba. Y en un circuito en el que es muy complicado rebasar, estar en las primeras posiciones daba una ventaja para entrar en la zona de puntos.
En seguida de la largada, cuando había logrado ganar dos posiciones, en la curva 7 de la primera vuelta, tocó la llanta trasera del auto de Adrian Sutil. Esto dañó su alerón delantero y tuvo que entrar a boxes para cambiarlo. Se reincorporó a la carrera en el lugar 23 y desde ese momento peló vuelta a vuelta para escalar lugares, hasta finalizar en la undécima posición.
Opina que la preparación que tenía y la estrategia que había fijado el equipo era la adecuada para obtener buenos resultados, sin embargo, la prematura entrada a boxes complicó todo. Y aun cuando, después de 39 giros tras con un gran rebase a Vitaly Petrov, logró colocarse décimo, la mecánica del auto le jugó mal y comenzó a presentar problemas con el KERS, lo que impidió pelar el lugar 10 con su compañero de equipo Kamui Kobayashi.
