Lights, camera, Yankees
Get your popcorn ready, the Yankees soap opera is in high gear. Emma Span reports:
There’s no show in baseball like the Yankees, and they never seem to disappoint.
Coming off a winter that was conflict-ridden even by their standards — with star shortstop Derek Jeter in testy contract negotiations and the general manager being overruled on personnel — one might think they would want to ease into the whole spring training thing.
Instead, the bright lights are back on and all the actors are fighting for center stage.
First, Hank Steinbrenner offered his thoughts on the Yankees’ problems last season — as if a team that comes within two victories of winning the AL pennant has problems. In doing so, he took a swipe at Jeter for being “too busy building mansions” prior to last season.
On a lighter note, there is Alex Rodriguez, perhaps the only player in baseball who could create a media firestorm by eating popcorn. More specifically, being fed popcorn by his main squeeze Cameron Diaz at the Super Bowl, and according to some reports getting angry that cameras were on him at the Big Game.
“Did anyone watch the Super Bowl?” Rodriguez said to laughter after arriving in camp. “No popcorn endorsements yet, but our lines are open. Who would be upset about getting fed popcorn?”
Popcorn. The Yankees. Seems fitting.
