UPDATE 1-Harris to buy healthcare IT provider Carefx

* Deal provides entry to commercial healthcare market

* Carefx system used in US, Europe, Asia

Feb 22 (Reuters) - Harris Corp (HRS.N) moved to expand its footprint in healthcare information technology by announcing plans to acquire Carefx Corp, a private company that develops healthcare and patient information systems, for $155 million.

Carefx, based in Scottsdale, Arizona, has 250 workers. The company has a patient information system called Fusionfx that is used in more than 800 hospitals, healthcare systems, and health information exchanges across North America, Europe and Asia.

Harris, a maker of telecommunications equipment, has been buoyed over the past year by orders for its tactical radios used by the military that distribute voice and data in an encrypted form. The company also manages the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration infrastructure that air traffic controllers use to communicate with each other and pilots.

"Harris Healthcare has been very strong in the federal government," Jim Traficant, vice president and general manager for Harris Healthcare Solutions, said on Tuesday. "Today what we're announcing with Carefx is the ability to take all these strengths that Harris has in intelligence, national security, the FAA and moving it to commercial healthcare as well."

He said the commercial market was a much bigger opportunity for Harris in terms of sales than the federal market.

The acquisition of Carefx is expected to be completed later this year.

Shares of Harris Corp were off 0.9 percent at $48.20. (Reporting by Karen Jacobs, editing by Gerald E. McCormick)
