Mr. Piyasvasti Amranand, THAI’s President together with members of management and staff, recently attended a briefing at THAI’s Head Office on THAI Safety Culture and Safety Management Systems (SMS) by Professor Terry von Thaden from the Institute of Aviation, University of Illinois. Professor von Thaden came from a distinguished family of aviation with her grandmother, Iris Louise McPhetridge Thaden (November 12, 1905 – November 9, 1979) was an aviation pioneer, holder of numerous aviation records, and the first woman to win the Bendix Trophy. More than 100 participants attended the briefing.

In addition to providing a special briefing on the Safety Management System (SMS), Professor Dr. Terry von Thaden shared results of a 2009 survey on THAI’s Safety Culture that was conducted by the Professor and Mr. Dechying Ruengvisesh, a PhD candidate at the University of Illinois.

According to Mr. Piyasvasti Amranand, “This cooperation between THAI and the University of Illinois marks another important chapter in our safety operations, showing our commitment to maintaining the highest practice in safety in all areas of operations. Safety has and always remains paramount to THAI without compromise. Results of this research will help us to realize where THAI stands within the aviation industry and practice our strong points to further develop areas where improvements may be needed to ensure a strong safety culture in accordance with the Safety Management System as required by ICAO.”

By establishing a resilient safety culture, it will enable every THAI employee to work in a secure and safe environment, while helping to maintain the company’s safety standards.
